Oakland – Kicking off The Submarine Tour with a two-night residency at the Fox Theater, The Marías sauntered through with sensual basslines and dreamy vocals in front of a sold-out crowd Wednesday night.
The four-piece group, led by the band’s namesake, María Zardoya, delivered a masterclass in the art of performance. Silhouetted behind the decedent stage backdrop, The Marías entranced the audience with sultry beats from their sophomore album, Submarine, with songs like Hamptons, Run Your Mouth, and Real Life. The love from the audience was palpable as they passionately sang in union with the band.
Before continuing with their performance, Zardoya reminded the crowd that there was one rule of the night which was to be present as much as possible. “Whatever happened an hour ago yesterday or last week, forget about it now and just be here”. A gentle reminder to all to fully savor being in the moment and enjoying the beauty of music together with others.
In addition to a myriad of their English-based hits, The Marías played their Spanish-based jams featuring “Lejos de Ti”, “Otro Atardecer”, and “Cariño” which had the voices of the Oakland crowd harmonizing, in unison, to every word.

Hailing from Los Angeles, the dynamic trio, Automatic, opened Wednesday night. Donning a seemingly deflated drum kit packed nothing short of bombastic power. Influence by the sounds of their predecessors Peaches, Bikini Kill, and the remnants of riot grrrl movement, Automatic delivered whimsical funk-driven bass, tight beats, and the winding of the droning synth in songs like “Skyscraper”, “I Love You, Fine”, and “Venus Hour”.
