Headlining Friday night’s show at Bottom of the Hill was Chicago based artist Mike Kinsella (aka Owen). Mike’s musical career has spanned more than two decades including his work with many Illinois-based bands such as Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls, and American Football. Mike is currently touring and promoting his newest album ‘The Falls of Sioux’ under his solo vehicle Owen. The album features songs that speak to self-acceptance wrapped in melancholic soft melodies and complex acoustics. With just an acoustic guitar, Owen gave a heartfelt performance to a packed house. He welcomed and engaged in questions from the audience and told funny stories which add an additional warmth and personal vibe to his performance.
Hrishikesh Hirway was the second artist to perform Friday night. Hrishikesh Hirway not only makes music, he is the host, creator and executive producer of the award winning podcast and Netflix television series ‘Song Exploder’. The podcast and series interviews musicans where they break down the creative process behind their songs. Hrishikesh has release four albums under the moniker ‘The One AM Radio’. During Friday’s performance he performed many songs that have yet to be released along with songs from his 2022 EP ‘Rooms I Use to Call my Own’.
The San Francisco-based group No Lights opened the show and is comprised of Matt O’Brien, Dan Sneddon, Israel Branson, and Ian Miller. Their sound is combination of post-punk and indie rock. Their music also has a vibe to it that reminds me of the bands Interpol, the Cure and the Pixies.
