The Stern Grove Festival closed out its 2024 season with The Big Picnic Weekend. Saturday, August 24 started out with an unusual summer rain storm, but by early afternoon, the sun was out warming the “Stern groovers” as they picnicked and pranced about the majestic Sigmund Stern Grove.
Headliners Sylvan Esso delighted the dancing crowd with old favorites such as “Die Young” and “Radio” as well as pieces from No Rules Sandy. Nick Sanborn’s beats and melodic backing provide the perfect tableau for Amelia Meath’s vocals and dancing. Sanborn shared that the August 24th show was Sylvan Esso’s last for the year and “this record cycle.” Meath noted the “beautiful energy” in the park. Sylvan Esso’s set enhanced that energy.
Opener Poolside and their “daytime disco” was the perfect vibe for the sunny Stern Grove afternoon as the audience batted about a disco ball balloon and folks with the nifty bubble machines making magic. Guest vocalist Ben Browning added to the frivolity.
DJ Marcus Rosario added cool background sounds before and between sets.
Sylvan Esso, Poolside and Marcus Rosario were all great! The beloved Stern Grove Festival is as much a celebration of all of San Francisco’s communities coming together as it is the music. Finding a spot on the hillside nestled amongst the Eucalyptus trees, arriving early to claim ground right in front of the stage, chilling in the meadow and enjoying the simulcast, watching the parade of people going here and there (the next generation of San Franciscans being carted about by their parents, running into friends and neighbors, sharing sunscreen and snacks with new friends) – all while taking in the music in a gorgeous park. At one point, Meath said to be sure “to tell your people you love them.” The Stern Grove Festival is an act of love to the people of San Francisco and the people return that same “beautiful energy.”
