Thousands gathered at Potrero del Sol in Potrero Hill for the final of three special shows presented by SF Live, Noise Pop, the SF Parks Alliance, and local venues. Along with Kilowatt, this show featured performances by Eagles of Death Metal, Starcrawler, and The Candy Whips.
Eagles of Death Metal, formed in Palm Springs by Jesse Hughes (vocals, guitar) and Josh Homme, have collaborated with various musicians over the years. This show featured Hughes, along with Scott Shiflett on guitar, Jennie Vee on bass, and Leah Bluestein on drums. Despite their name, meant to be humorous, the band leans more toward rock and roll with hints of garage rock. Hughes joked with the audience, “We have a gathering, no, we have a congregation … celebrating both kinds of music, Rock and Roll.”
Hughes’ rapport with the audience was on full display throughout the show. At one point, he quipped, “I am looking at you m**f** as much as you’re looking at me,” frequently leaving the stage to interact directly with fans. Opening with “I Only Want You” from their 2004 album Peace Love Death Metal, EODM performed a mix of songs from their four studio albums. During the encore, they dipped into metal with a cover of Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” before closing with “Speaking in Tongues.”
The afternoon kicked off with a performance by Oakland’s glam-synth band, The Candy Whips. Followed by a last-minute surprise performance by LA-based Starcrawler, blending raw power with a theatrical stage presence that brought an electrifying energy, ramped up the heat and fired up the crowd.
