Headlining a sold-out show at the Rickshaw Stop Monday night was Orla Gartland. The Irish singer, songwriter-musician from Dublin, Ireland is touring and promoting her sophomore album, Everybody Needs a Hero released in October. The album tracks a single relationship from start to finish, chronicling “the good, the bad and the very ugly” parts of love. Orla has a DIY approach to her song-writing, crafting emotionally arresting millennial indie pop songs. Gartland is also a member of the indie art pop supergroup FIZZ.
Orla got the crowd going from the get-go opening with her energy fill hit song ‘Kiss Ur Face Forever”. You could feel the electricity of the audience through the whole show and Orla reciprocated in kind. Orla’s playlist of songs traversed a melody of sounds and tempos from blaring guitars, clashing drums and penetrating synth keyboards to gentle weeping ballads.
One fun part of the show was Orla introducing a spinning wheel list of songs and having members of the audience come on stage, dance and spin the wheel to determine the next song. Two young ladies had the privilege of participating in that event and could not have been more excited. Orla also brought out opener Emma Harner to perform a song together. Orla’s performance Monday night was self-assured, confident, energetic but most of all, fun.
Opening for Orla Gartland was Emma Harner, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist from Nebraska. Her music is a unique blend of folk, indie and math rock. Her wistful sounding music and peppy attitude got the audience going and was a great appetizers for the headlining act.
