Moontricks packed The Independent this past Friday with their bluesy electro-folk magic, uniquely combining guitar, banjo, keys, and harmonica, with foot stomping beats and soulful melodies. The Canadian duo’s electronic spin on folk makes for an amplified musical experience that is both enchanting and haunting. Highlights of the night for me were when Nathan Gurley would step out from his keyboard to amp up the crowd with harmonica play, while Sean Rodman shredded the guitar barefoot. Together they generate a chemistry that makes them a delight to behold.
Siren & Seer were the opening act of the night and the slow burn preceding the dance floor fire ignited by Moontricks. As their set went on, their seductive spell slowly drew me in. I was mesmerized to the point of almost forgetting that they weren’t the headliner. Moontricks and Siren & Seer together felt like a complete collaboration, equally supporting one another in a vital way. Their harmonizing at the end of the night with “Mountains” was the perfect cap on the evening.
