I had the pleasure of photographing Delicate Steve, for the second time in my career, last Thursday at The Chapel in San Francisco. This second time around was definitely a more delicate side of Steve than the first livelier show that I saw at The Independent back in 2022. Thursday’s vibe was kind of like a warm, tropical wave of atmosphere that was both mellow and uplifting. Overall, what I enjoy most about Steve’s guitar playing is the way he skillfully bends the notes as if he is speaking through them. Coupled with his animated body movements, I really get the sense of someone attempting to conversate through sound. Adding to that, there is an endearing chemistry between Steve and his band members that completes this conversation, bringing it full circle. A highlight of Thursday’s show, and also a bit of a departure from the other numbers, was an instrumental cover of “Roads” by Portishead. I was delighted by this because of how many times I have fondly played Portishead’s album Dummy from start to finish over the years, and also because I did not see it coming. Having now had two completely different (and positive) show experiences from Steve, I will definitely be seeking out another.
San Francisco’s own Big Light opened up the night for Delicate Steve, with enthusiastic fans cheering and thrashing around at the front of the stage. The rapport between the crowd and the band seemed to be of one that is deeply rooted, and was charming to behold. It felt like a very San Francisco set, proudly representing and celebrating the city’s indie/emo culture that Big Light came up in.
