Buzzy Chicago Indie Duo Rock The Chapel
Up-and-coming, indie rockers, Friko, appeared at ease and in control of The Chapel crowd last week in San Francisco. The Chicago based duo blazed through the majority of their debut LP, Where we’ve been, where we go from here with equal parts precision, efficiency, and emotion; showcasing the bands ‘bursting at the seams” sound and presence that is primed to break out.
Drummer, Bailey Minzenberger, describes their sound as “controlled chaos, frenetic.” An apt description. From the opening moments of ‘Crimson to Chrome’ followed by a blistering performance of ‘Criminal’ to the closing song ‘Get Numb to It!’ people were buzzing.
Led by singer/guitarist, Niko Kapetan’s confident and defiant vocals and Minzenbergers, propulsive drumming the night highlighted the young groups genre melding sound of 2000s era indie rock and punk.
The best moments of the night, though, came from the quieter, vulnerable performances of ‘For Ella’ and their cover of Elliot Smith’s ‘Ballad of Big Nothing’; offering a perfect counter balance to the rest of the nights punchier jams.
Friko continues their own tour through the summer including appearances at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan and Lollapalooza. Then in the fall they make their rounds again through the US supporting viral Australian indie rockers, Royal Otis.
