What a fun night.
Black Pumas finished off this leg of their tour at the Meritage Resort in Napa last night, and it was a celebration. Eric Burton is a super generous performer. He spent as much time amongst the voracious crowd as he could. After he jumped down to spend time with the adoring fans, he asked his bandmates on stage if it was “his turn” to play the guitar, or if he could stay down to spend more time with the fans. They responded “take your time” even though it WAS his turn to play his guitar. He stayed a while longer. So sweet.
Black Pumas played selections from both of their albums and ended the night with Eric playing an amazing solo cover of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car – this was hugely meaningful to him, as this was the song that he used to play when he was busking at the Santa Monica Pier before he got his big break.
Opening the night was Oakland’s own hip-hop collective Souls of Mischief. A-Plus, Phesto, Opio, and Tajai. Joined by DJ Lazy Boy & DJ Toure (Hieroglyphics DJ) – they warmed up the crowd and had everyone sharing their energy and screaming “93 ’til Infinity” along with the band.
