Thursday night Cafe Du Nord featured artists Hannah Connolly and Jade Bird. Both artists performed solo acoustic sets which set the night for a warm, personal, and intimate event.
Singer song-writer and Wisconsin native Hannah Connolly started the night off with the song ‘Reno’ from her latest album ‘Shadowboxing’, written primarily during the pandemic. Hannah’s sweet and gentle voice lent itself well to an acoustic set full of mixtures of indie, country, and pop sensibilities. Between songs, Hannah shared the trials and tribulations of her musical journey of taking the plunge to make her passion for music her profession, and she’s well on her way.
Headlining Thursday night was singer-songwriter Jade Bird. Though originally from the UK, Jade Bird’s music is infused with elements of Americana, folk, indie, and alt-country. Promoting her new EP ‘Burn the Hard Drive’ released in April, is a short collection of songs that speaks to the grief experienced with the end of a relationship.
Though Jade Bird performed unplugged, her strong strumming guitar playing and powerful voice filled the room with songs like the energy-packed ‘Uh Huh and softer songs like C’est La Vie. Jade Bird treated the audience to a twenty-one-song set evoking a gambit of emotions ranging from melancholy to joyous energy. She frequently engaged with the audience sharing the stories behind her songs, while inserting bits of self-deprecation into her story-telling sparking laughter with the audience. Jade Bird’s warm, honest personality injected an authentic feel into her performance and songs which the audience cherished and praised. I look forward to seeing Jade Bird again next time she’s in town.
