Headlining at The Chapel Tuesday night was King Buzzo and Trevor Dunn. King Buzzo (a.k.a Buzz Osborne) is best known as a guitarist and founding member of the influential band the Melvins. Trevor Dunn came prominence in the 1990s with the experimental band Mr. Bungle. Frequent collaborators in the past, Buzzo and Trevor have come together again for the Buzzo King tour. The tour is a completely acoustic affair with Osborne playing acoustic guitar and Trevor playing the stand-up concert bass.
The duo are quite a potent musical pair. Osborne’s down-tune strings, punk and metal approach compliments Trevor’s guttural stand-up bass vibe that creates a distinct heavy sound. Their music sort of reminds me of the Oakland-based string metal band Judgement Day which utilized classical string instruments to create a heavy metal-like sound that is very different from what I hear in today’s music.
JD Pinkus opened the show promoting his newest album Fungus Shui. JD is probably best known as the former bassist for the art-punk band The Butthole Surfers. JD has also previously played with Buzz Osborne’s band the Melvins. This time around, JD was playing the banjo using a bunch of distortion petals to create a banjo sound I’ve never heard before but found very appealing.
