I had literally just returned from Alaska when a request came in for Medium Build at Independent. I listened to about 30 seconds of his music and thought sure, it’s a sign I have to go. We can find signs in anything, but this one was RIGHT THERE. I’m really glad I went to see him in person.
The show was sold out to a very happy crowd. He immediately reminded me of Citizen Cope whom I’ve loved forever but he is his own storytelling musician to be sure. Some songs are pretty raw and he delivers them as such. His passion never wanes in his delivery. His voice is that kind that I love that is deep, a bit raspy and carries emotions into the ether. If you have a break-up and want someone to commiserate with, he has a song for that. The kind you repeat over and over and over and know you’re not alone in the situation.
He spoke often with interesting stories and amusing anecdotes about being a musician which completely resonated with me and being a photographer. There is a lot that is weird about it. He talked about admonishing his mom for revealing too much but he does just that in his songs. I knew nothing about him when I walked in but walked out feeling like I met a decent human being that I want to know better and more about.
His album Country seems to showcase his life in Anchorage and Nashville and the stories that came from the places and the people and the relationships that are of friendships and lovers. We can all relate to that.
Rosie Rush opened for him and it was a perfect choice. She’s young and already has a solid delivery of her stories that she shares with us. Like Medium Build, I walked away thinking I knew her almost personally and intimately as a friend. Neither are shy about letting us into their hearts and minds and for me, that’s something that is difficult, so I really appreciate the individuals who do that.
Medium Build at Independent is one of those shows I’ll remember beyond the photographs I made.
