The Commodores delivered an afternoon of non-stop hits, bringing their timeless blend of funk, soul, and R&B to the Stern Grove Festival. Formed in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1968, the current lineup features founding member William King, alongside Walter Orange (joined in 1969) and J.D. Nicholas (who replaced Lionel Richie in 1984), backed by their five-piece band, The Mean Machine.
From the opening “Wild Thing” to hits like “Three Times a Lady” and “Nightshift.” The Commodores showcased their enduring talent and showmanship. They engaged the audience with stories from their decades-long career, adding a personal touch to the concert. Their charismatic stage presence had the crowd dancing and singing along, creating a festive atmosphere. By the closing song “Brick House,” the sold out audience were all on their feet with their hands in the air.
Bringing high-energy funk and soul to Stern Grove, Oakland’s “The Grease Traps” kicked off the early afternoon with incredible vigor. Lead singer “The Gata” brought unstoppable energy to the stage, getting everyone primed and in the mood for The Commodores.
