The Independent in San Francisco was packed to the brim last night for Zaho de Sagazan‘s sold-out performance—a testament to her growing international acclaim. From the moment she stepped on stage, it was clear this would be more than just a concert; it was an experience.
Opening with the first track from her critically acclaimed debut album, La Symphonie des éclairs, Zaho wasted no time in immersing the audience in her unique fusion of electronic beats and poetic lyrics. Her voice, reminiscent of chanson legends like Barbara and Jacques Brel yet distinctly her own, filled the intimate venue with a raw and commanding presence.
Dressed in her signature avant-garde style (which was reminiscent of a gospel singer), Zaho moved effortlessly between songs, blending emotional vulnerability with theatrical flair. Highlights included a haunting rendition of “La symphonie des éclairs,” where the room seemed to hold its collective breath, and the driving rhythms of “Tristesse,” which had the audience swaying as though caught in a shared heartbeat.
Her band was equally compelling, creating a lush sonic landscape that ranged from minimalist to grandiose. The live arrangement of her music added new layers, making familiar tracks feel fresh and immediate.
The true magic of the night, however, lay in her ability to connect. Between songs, Zaho spoke in a mix of French and English, sharing anecdotes about her journey, inspirations and search for love. Her humor and warmth dissolved any language barrier, drawing the audience closer.
As the encore loomed, the anticipation was palpable. Then came the unmistakable opening notes of David Bowie’s “Modern Love.” Zaho’s interpretation was transformative—a blend of reverence and reinvention. Her powerful vocals soared over pulsating synths, reimagining the classic as a hymn to the timelessness of love and individuality. It was a fitting conclusion to an evening that celebrated artistic expression in all its forms.
By the time the last note faded, the crowd erupted in a standing ovation, reluctant to let the moment end. Zaho de Sagazan had not just performed—she had left an indelible mark on everyone in attendance, proving why she is one of the most exciting artists to emerge in recent years.
