The Bay Area was ablaze with excitement as Mosswood Meltdown returned to Oakland’s Mosswood Park on July 6th and 7th. Promising an unforgettable experience for music enthusiasts, this year’s festival boasted an eclectic lineup that left attendees buzzing with anticipation.
Headlining the event was none other than the iconic The B-52s, whose rare appearance was a highlight eagerly awaited by fans. Joining them were local favorites like Hunx and his Punx, known for their energetic performances, and the incomparable Big Freedia, whose explosive energy lit up the stage. Punk pioneers Redd Kross made their mark, and Pure Hell made a historic return to the West Coast after more than three decades, thrilling longtime fans and newcomers alike. The tribute to the Butthole Surfers by Gibby Haynes and the Paul Green Rock Academy added a nostalgic twist, while Cher Strauberry’s latest project, WIFEY, brought a fresh perspective to the festival.
John Waters, the irrepressible host, returned to keep spirits high and add his own unique flair to the festivities. As if that wasn’t enough, Waters also took on the role of judge in Mosswood Meltdown’s inaugural drag contest, curated by the fabulous Peaches Christ. This addition injected an extra dose of creativity and community spirit into the event, celebrating diversity and self-expression.
The event ended with a spectacular performance by Bay Area legends, The Mummies. Their incredible set was dynamic, explosive and the perfect end to an amazing show.
Beyond the music and entertainment, Mosswood Meltdown fostered a vibrant atmosphere of community and camaraderie.
